Template Spotlight: SEO Metatags
Meta tags are tidbits of text that describe a webpage’s content. This information only appears in your page’s HTML, or source code, and not on the page itself. Think of them as invisible labels that only search engines and web crawlers can read.
This information is called “metadata,” which make it easier for search engines like Google to know what your page is all about. Meta tags should be optimized so that the most crucial components of your webpage are highlighted, and consequently, rank higher in search results.
As tricky as meta tags are, they are crucial for a good SEO rank. Copysmith is here to help you generate meta tags that will increase your webpage’s online visibility.
1. Choose the content type, and name your campaign.
Start with clicking on the SEO Metatags template section. Select the name of the card, this is for your reference only and does not affect the generations.
2. Enter in key information.
First, add your company name the way you want it to appear in the metatags.
Metatags will vary depending on the intended audience, drawing on characteristics like your potential customer’s age, status, lifestyle, passions, habits or particular needs. Indicate your target audience: our example company is an intermediary for pharmacies selling insulin and other prescription medications, and we will try targeting ‘diabetics.’ Add only 1–3 audiences for best performance.
Metatags require your company’s URL—you should have a metatag for every page you want to rank on Google.
Next, you’re going to add a short product description of your company or product. We recommend 1 to 3 sentences that speak to your company’s main features and values. Don’t make it too long, or the copy will become deterministic.
Type in target keywords (just 1–2) defining the text that the metatag will contain: this may include the main features of your company or product that are most likely be used in the search box.
Additionally, you can indicate keywords to avoid that you DO NOT want appearing in your generated ads. If you can’t think of any, feel free to add them later on.
3. Generate copy!
Click “Generate” and voila—you get 10–20 pieces of copy. Those are ready-made SEO metatags!
In each generation, the number of symbols used in title and description fields is indicated, so you could see how many more symbols can be added if you choose to modify the metatag content.
4. Discard what doesn’t work for you, heart your favourites, and choose from your top results.
You can eliminate the entries you don’t want to use from the list. Click on the Trash Bin icon at the bottom of each generation, and the generation will be removed. For example, this generation doesn’t exactly get to the point:
Clicking on the heart icon will place the choice on top of the list:
5. Play around with parameters, and edit your favourites!
You liked one of the generations, but your company’s name came out incomplete: you can simply click on the generation and edit the name!
Fun fact: when you upgrade to a paid account, we use your liking, editing, and deletion activity to fine-tune our model’s understanding of your writing style. So the more you use Copysmith, the closer to your writing style copysmithing becomes!
What’s amazing about Copysmith is that you can even feed phrases Copysmith generated for you back into the left-hand component of the template. For example, after the first pass some of our generations mention diabetes type-1 and type-2, and you don’t want specific medical information to appear on your business page, so let’s add, ’Type-1’ and ’Type-2’ as keywords to avoid.
We hearted some of our favourites.
6. (Optional) Share your generations with others to review
You may want to discuss the generated metatags. To share your work with colleagues, simply click “Share copy.”
Your manager can upvote and downvote generations.
We’re building ways to make collaboration and stakeholder management so easy it’s magical—stay tuned. And if you want to tell us about any hitches you had during this process, we’d love to hear them—please email [email protected]!
